Scripture Revisited – A poem by Mary Lynn Adzema

Scripture Revisited
by Mary Lynn Adzema

Audio Presentation by the Author:

You made it, Jesus

Up the sacred river born of tears

Tears flowing from Galgotha spring

Upstream, upstream from suffering to joy

Is what the trip is all about.

And it’s our turn now

But reading holy books is not enough

For castaways in time

The trip begins inside

Inside Lachrymal ducts,

According to our latest map of Grace

Branching to the limbic cortex

And our Book of Job

Should we care to read it.

Meanwhile beneath the theta waves

Rocks and shoals emerge

In dream

And at the restless shadowed brink,

Are memories

Or are they angels in disguise

Waiting to unscale a child’s eyes

So you and I can simply be…

Perhaps this is our Genesis

To breast the current of the Now

Half in fear, half in joy

At swimming

Knowing of the existential possiblity

Baptism was by lightning

And our only rosary,

A chain of protein molecules

Aquiver with the holy certainty…

I am.
