When we do take in the world’s messages, we see that even the tiniest details of reality — of its architecture and components — are instructive to us on our journey. One example of how such teaching is to be found in even the most trivial of details of the physical world is discovered by “listening” to the shape of the “lowly” mushroom. When we do, and we reflect upon it, we notice it is a breadcrumb from ourselves as Divinity; it is a letter from Divinity, a signpost to lead us hOMe.

You see, mushrooms, in their umbrella shape, are symbolic of the U-turn that is necessary in our spiritual evolution in returning to the ground of existence. They are “road signs” for the way hOMe. As Jung explained and Berman clarified forcefully, the path of enlightenment is not a ladder path from no consciousness to awareness, or from low consciousness to higher consciousness. No. Our essence is the most expanded consciousness of all — Divinity. And our sojourn in life is one in which we begin, in the womb, with a relatively enlightened state in which our identity is rooted in the Divine, and we are deeply connected and accessing of Divinity, to one where we are separated from those roots and become a solitary unit.
